Quick checks you can do
- Do the dash lights dim heavily when you try to start? (battery/connection clue)
- Try headlights: are they very dim, or do they drop when you attempt to crank?
- Make sure the car is in Park/Neutral (auto) or clutch fully down (manual).
- If you can, try a jump start. If it cranks after, it’s likely battery/charging related.
Why a starter motor clicks
🔋 Weak or failing battery
Enough power to click the solenoid, not enough to spin the starter.
🔩 Corroded terminals / poor earth
Loose or corroded battery terminals or earth straps reduce power to the starter.
⚙ Starter solenoid fault
Solenoid clicks but doesn’t engage fully or can’t deliver power to the motor.
🧰 Starter motor worn
Internal wear can cause intermittent starting, clicking, or no crank.
🔌 Relay / fuse / wiring fault
Starter relay or wiring can fail, causing inconsistent starting.
🧠 Immobiliser / key issue
Some cars won’t crank if the key isn’t recognised or the immobiliser blocks the start.
What AutoAid checks on site
We test battery voltage and cranking performance, check terminals and earths, inspect starter circuit relays/fuses, and confirm whether the starter motor is receiving power. You’ll get a clear diagnosis and price before any repairs.
