Immobiliser Light On? What It Means & What To Do
An immobiliser warning usually means your car isn’t recognising the key, the security system has a fault,
or the battery voltage is too low. If the engine won’t start, AutoAid can diagnose it on-site in Warrington
and surrounding areas.

IF IT WON’T CRANK / WON’T START
Most immobiliser issues present as a non-start. Try the quick checks below first. If it still won’t start,
you’ll likely need a scan + key/immobiliser system checks.
MOST COMMON CAUSE
Low voltage (weak battery), key fob battery failing, or poor connection at the battery terminals.
Modern security systems are very sensitive to voltage dips.

Quick Checks You Can Try Now
These steps solve a lot of “immobiliser light on” problems without tools. Don’t force anything — if you’re stuck, we can come out.
1) Try your spare key (if you have one)
If the spare works, your main key/fob is likely the issue (fob battery, damaged transponder, etc.).
2) Replace the key fob battery
A weak fob battery can stop the car recognising the key, especially in cold weather.
3) Lock/unlock the car and retry
Sometimes the security module “resets” after a lock/unlock cycle.
4) Check the main battery voltage
If the car battery is weak, modules can misbehave. If lights are dim or it cranks slowly, the battery may be the root cause.
5) If you jump start — do it correctly
Incorrect jump starting can spike voltage and upset modules. If you’ve recently jump started, tell us — it helps diagnosis.
6) Try “key learning / emergency start” methods (model-dependent)
Some cars can start by holding the fob near the start button/column. If your manual mentions an emergency start procedure, try that.
Tip: If the immobiliser light is flashing rapidly and the car won’t start, it’s often “key not recognised”.
If it’s solid and you have other warning lights, voltage or module comms can be involved.
Why The Immobiliser Light Comes On
Common causes
- Key not recognised (fob battery, damaged key, transponder fault)
- Weak car battery / voltage drop causing security module errors
- Faulty antenna ring / reader around ignition barrel or start button area
- Wiring / connector issues (loose plugs, corrosion, water ingress)
- ECU / BCM / immobiliser module comms faults (CAN communication errors)
- Aftermarket alarms/immobilisers interfering with factory system
When it’s urgent
- Car cuts out while driving (rare but serious)
- Immobiliser light + multiple warning lights after jump start
- Strong smell of burning / electrical issue
- Repeated non-starts getting worse
If it’s cutting out or behaving unpredictably, stop somewhere safe and call.
How AutoAid Diagnoses It On-Site
Immobiliser faults are usually solved by pinpointing whether it’s the key, the reader, the battery/charging,
or a module communication issue.
1) Diagnostic scan
Read fault codes from immobiliser/BCM/ECU, check live data and key recognition status.
2) Battery & voltage tests
Voltage drop, charging system check, and main power/earth integrity tests.
3) Key/reader checks
Rule out fob battery/key faults and check the reader/antenna ring circuits where possible.
If parts are needed (battery, terminals, wiring repair, starter/alternator-related), we’ll explain options and pricing before any work.
Typical Fixes & What They Usually Cost
Prices depend on the vehicle and what’s actually faulty. This is a simple guide so you know what to expect.
Issue
What it means
Typical outcome
Weak car battery
Voltage dips cause immobiliser errors
Battery test + replacement if needed
Key fob battery
Key not recognised intermittently
Replace fob battery + re-test
Reader/antenna fault
Key never recognised
Identify reader circuit fault (may need parts)
Module communication
CAN/BCM/ECU faults or water ingress
Scan + electrical checks; may need specialist module work

Immobiliser Light FAQs
Can I drive with the immobiliser light on?
If the car is running normally, it may be a stored fault or intermittent key recognition issue —
but you risk a non-start later. If the car is cutting out or the light is flashing with other warnings,
don’t keep driving — get it checked.
Will disconnecting the battery reset the immobiliser?
Sometimes it can clear a temporary glitch, but it can also create new issues on some cars (radio codes, windows needing relearn, etc.).
If you do disconnect, wait a few minutes and reconnect carefully — but ideally we diagnose it properly.
Why did this happen after a jump start?
Jump starts can create voltage spikes or dips. Security/ECU modules can log faults or lose sync when voltage is unstable.
A scan + charging system test usually finds the reason quickly.
Is it always the key?
Not always. It’s commonly key/fob battery related, but low vehicle battery, poor earths, and reader/module faults are also common.
The scan results usually point us in the right direction.
