What to do immediately
- If the temperature gauge is high: pull over safely and switch off.
- If the gauge is normal: drive gently to a safe place and check coolant when cooled.
- Wait 20–30 minutes before opening the coolant cap.
- Check for leaks under the car and around hoses/radiator.
Common reasons the coolant light comes on
💧 Coolant leak
Split hose, radiator leak, expansion tank crack or loose clamp.
🌀 Water pump leak/fault
Coolant leaks from the pump or circulation becomes weak.
🌡 Thermostat issue
Stuck thermostat can cause overheating or odd temperature swings.
🧊 Radiator / cooling fan
Fan not coming on or blocked radiator reduces cooling capacity.
🧯 Head gasket symptoms
Persistent coolant loss, pressure in hoses, white smoke, rough running.
🧠 Sensor / level sensor
Sometimes the level sensor fails, but check level first.
Can I top up coolant?
Yes — but only when the engine is fully cool. Use the correct coolant if possible. If you’re losing coolant, it will return. The key is finding the leak.
How AutoAid checks coolant warning lights
We inspect for leaks, check coolant level/condition, confirm fan operation, and run diagnostics for related fault codes. You’ll get a clear explanation and price before any work starts.
