What to do first
- Check whether the light is solid or flashing.
- If it’s solid and the car drives normally, a proper motorway run may help (see below).
- If it’s flashing or in limp mode, book diagnostics — forcing it can make it worse.
- If the engine warning light is also on, the car may be preventing regeneration.
What the DPF light usually means
🧱 DPF loading high
Filter is filling with soot because it hasn’t completed regeneration.
🌡 Regen not completing
Short trips, low engine temp, or stop/start driving prevents regen finishing.
📟 Sensor fault
DPF pressure sensor / temp sensor faults can trigger warnings and stop regen.
🌀 EGR / intake issues
EGR faults and air leaks increase soot and overload the DPF quickly.
⛽ Fuel/combustion issues
Injectors, boost problems or misfires can increase soot and block the DPF.
🧊 Engine running cold
Thermostat faults can stop the car reaching temps needed to regen.
Can I do a “DPF regen drive”?
If the DPF light is solid and the car isn’t in limp mode, a long steady drive can help. Aim for a safe route where you can keep consistent speed for 20–30 minutes.
- Drive when the engine is warm.
- Try a steady cruise (avoid stop/start).
- If the light doesn’t go off after a proper run, it needs diagnosing.
How AutoAid diagnoses DPF warnings
We scan fault codes, check live data (DPF pressure/temp where possible), and look for the underlying reason regen is failing. You’ll get clear advice and pricing before any work starts.
