What to do immediately
- Pull over safely and switch the engine off as soon as you can.
- Do not keep driving “to see if it goes away”.
- Wait a few minutes, then check the oil level (dipstick) on level ground.
- Look for leaks under the car (fresh oil on the ground, wet sump area).
Oil light vs oil level message (not the same)
Many cars have two different warnings: Oil pressure light (often red oil can) = stop driving. A separate oil level / top up oil message may allow gentle driving to a safe place (but still needs attention). If you’re unsure — treat it as urgent.
Most common causes of an oil warning light
🛢 Low oil level
Oil consumption or a leak can drop the level and trigger pressure issues.
💧 Oil leak
Leaking sump, filter housing, oil cooler lines, gasket/seal failures.
🔧 Oil filter / incorrect oil
Blocked/incorrect filter or wrong oil spec can reduce flow and pressure.
🧠 Oil pressure sensor
Sometimes the sensor fails — but you must confirm pressure before driving.
⚙ Oil pump / pickup blockage
Pickup strainer blocked with sludge or pump fault causes low pressure.
🧯 Engine wear
Internal wear can reduce pressure, especially when hot at idle.
Can I just top up the oil?
If the level is low, topping up can help — but if the oil light is on while driving, you still need to confirm there isn’t a pressure problem, leak or pump issue. If the engine is noisy (tapping/knocking), don’t run it.
How AutoAid diagnoses an oil warning light
We check oil level and condition, inspect for leaks, scan for fault codes, and where needed confirm oil pressure properly. We’ll explain the cause clearly and confirm the price before any work.
