What to do first
- Let the engine cool fully before checking coolant level.
- Check the expansion tank for MIN/MAX level markers.
- If low, top up with the correct coolant (or water in an emergency only).
- Check under the car for wet patches and note colour (pink/blue/green/orange varies).
Common causes of coolant leaks
🧵 Split hose / loose clamp
Hoses harden with age. Clamps can loosen, causing drips under pressure.
🧊 Radiator leak
Cracks or corrosion can cause coolant loss, often seen at the front of the car.
🌡 Thermostat housing
Common leak point. Plastic housings can warp or crack.
🚿 Water pump leak
Coolant can leak from the pump seal. Sometimes you’ll see a trail near the belt side.
🔥 Heater matrix / pipes
Misting windows, damp carpets, sweet smell inside can indicate a heater leak.
🧯 Head gasket symptoms
Pressurised hoses, constant coolant loss, white smoke or “mayo” can be warning signs.
Can I keep driving?
- Small seepage: maybe short trips if level stays stable (still needs fix).
- Visible dripping: book ASAP to avoid overheating.
- Overheating / steam: don’t drive.
- Coolant light on: stop, cool down, and check level.
How AutoAid finds the leak
