Quick checks you can do
- Do the dash lights dim a lot when you try to start? (battery/connection clue)
- Try headlights: are they very dim or do they drop when you crank?
- Make sure the car is in Park/Neutral (auto) or clutch fully down (manual).
- If you have jump leads, try a jump start (if it cranks after, battery/charging likely).
Most common causes of “no crank”
🔋 Weak/flat battery
Most common. Battery may show lights but not have enough power to crank.
🔩 Bad terminals / earth strap
Loose/corroded terminals or a bad earth can stop power reaching the starter.
⚙ Starter motor fault
Worn starter, stuck solenoid, internal failure — often click/no crank.
🔌 Starter relay / fuse
Relay or fuse failure can cause silence when you turn the key.
🧠 Immobiliser / key issue
Key not recognised or immobiliser fault can prevent cranking.
🚗 Neutral safety / clutch switch
Auto not detecting Park/Neutral, or clutch switch fault on manuals.
What AutoAid checks on site
We test battery voltage and cranking performance, inspect terminals and earths, check relays/fuses, and confirm whether the starter motor is receiving power. You’ll get a clear diagnosis and price before any repairs.
